Naomi Widowed
1 It came to pass in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Beth-lehem in Judah went to sojourn in the field of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth-lehem in Judah. They came into the field of Moab, and continued there. 3 Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons. G UIMTh ELIMLK EISh NOMI UThShER AIE UShNI BNIA ג וימת אלימלך איש נעמי ותשאר היא ושני בניה
4 They took them wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth; and they dwelt there about ten years. D UIShEU LAM NShIM MEBIUTh ShM AEChTh ORFA UShM AShNITh RUTh UIShBU ShM KOShR ShNIM ד וישאו להם נשים מאביות שם האחת ערפה ושם השנית רות וישבו שם כעשר שנים

6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the field of Moab; for she had heard in the field of Moab how that IAUA had remembered His people in giving them bread. 7 She went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. 8 Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law: 'Go, return each of you to her mother's house; IAUA deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me. 9 IAUA grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.' Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept. T IThN IAUA LKM UMTsEN MNUChA EShA BITh EIShA UThShQ LAN UThShENA QULN UThBKINA ט יתן יהוה לכם ומצאן מנוחה אשה בית אישה ותשק להן ותשאנה קולן ותבכינה
10 They said to her: 'Nay, but we will return with you to your people.' I UThEMRNA-LA KI-EThK NShUB LOMK י ותאמרנה-לה כי-אתך נשוב לעמך
11 Naomi said: 'Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? have I yet sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? IE UThEMR NOMI ShBNA BNThI LMA ThLKNA OMI AOUD-LI BNIM BMOI UAIU LKM LENShIM יא ותאמר נעמי שבנה בנתי למה תלכנה עמי העוד-לי בנים במעי והיו לכם לאנשים
12 Turn back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say: I have hope, should I even have an husband to-night, and also bear sons; IB ShBNA BNThI LKN KI ZQNThI MAIUTh LEISh KI EMRThI ISh-LI ThQUA GM AIIThI ALILA LEISh UGM ILDThI BNIM יב שבנה בנתי לכן כי זקנתי מהיות לאיש כי אמרתי יש-לי תקוה גם הייתי הלילה לאיש וגם ילדתי בנים
13 would you tarry for them till they were grown? would you shut yourselves off for them and have no husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieves me much for your sakes, for the hand of IAUA is gone forth against me.' 15 She said: 'Behold, your sister-in-law is gone back to her people, and to her god; return you after your sister-in-law.' TU UThEMR ANA ShBA IBMThK EL-OMA UEL-ELAIA ShUBI EChRI IBMThK טו ותאמר הנה שבה יבמתך אל-עמה ואל-אלהיה שובי אחרי יבמתך
16 Ruth said: 'Entreat me not to leave you, and to return from following after you; for whither you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God; TZ UThEMR RUTh EL-ThFGOI-BI LOZBK LShUB MEChRIK KI EL-EShR ThLKI ELK UBEShR ThLINI ELIN OMK OMI UELAIK ELAI טז ותאמר רות אל-תפגעי-בי לעזבך לשוב מאחריך כי אל-אשר תלכי אלך ובאשר תליני אלין עמך עמי ואלהיך אלהי

18 When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking to her. ICh UThRE KI-MThEMTsTh AIE LLKTh EThA UThChDL LDBR ELIA יח ותרא כי-מתאמצת היא ללכת אתה ותחדל לדבר אליה
19 So they two went until they came to Beth-lehem. It came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, that all the city was astir concerning them, and the women said: 'Is this Naomi?' IT UThLKNA ShThIAM OD-BUENA BITh LChM UIAI KBUENA BITh LChM UThAM KL-AOIR OLIAN UThEMRNA AZETh NOMI יט ותלכנה שתיהם עד-בואנה בית לחם ויהי כבואנה בית לחם ותהם כל-העיר עליהן ותאמרנה הזאת נעמי
20 She said to them: 'Call me not Naomi, call me Marah; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. K UThEMR ELIAN EL-ThQRENA LI NOMI QREN LI MRE KI-AMR ShDI LI MED כ ותאמר אליהן אל-תקראנה לי נעמי קראן לי מרא כי-המר שדי לי מאד
21 I went out full, and IAUA has brought me back home empty; why call you me Naomi, seeing IAUA has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?' 22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the field of Moab--and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley harvest. 22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the field of Moab--and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
