2 that Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying: 'Come, let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono.' But they thought to do me mischief. 3 I sent messengers to them, saying: 'I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down; why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?' 4 They sent to me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner. D UIShLChU ELI KDBR AZA ERBO FOMIM UEShIB EUThM KDBR AZA ד וישלחו אלי כדבר הזה ארבע פעמים ואשיב אותם כדבר הזה
5 Then sent Sanballat his servant to me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand; A UIShLCh ELI SNBLT KDBR AZA FOM ChMIShITh ETh-NORU UEGRTh FThUChA BIDU ה וישלח אלי סנבלט כדבר הזה פעם חמישית את-נערו ואגרת פתוחה בידו
6 wherein was written: 'It is reported among the nations, and Geshem says it, that you and the Jews think to rebel; for which cause you build the wall; and you would be their king, even according to these words. U KThUB BA BGUIM NShMO UGShMU EMR EThA UAIAUDIM ChShBIM LMRUD OL-KN EThA BUNA AChUMA UEThA AUA LAM LMLK KDBRIM AELA ו כתוב בה בגוים נשמע וגשמו אמר אתה והיהודים חשבים למרוד על-כן אתה בונה החומה ואתה הוה להם למלך כדברים האלה
7 You have also appointed prophets to proclaim of you at Jerusalem, saying: There is a king in Judah; and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.' 8 Then I sent to him, saying: 'There are no such things done as you say, but you pretend them out of your own heart.' Ch UEShLChA ELIU LEMR LE NAIA KDBRIM AELA EShR EThA EUMR KI MLBK EThA BUDEM ח ואשלחה אליו לאמר לא נהיה כדברים האלה אשר אתה אומר כי מלבך אתה בודאם
9 For they all would have us afraid, saying: 'Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done.' But now, strengthen You my hands. T KI KLM MIREIM EUThNU LEMR IRFU IDIAM MN-AMLEKA ULE ThOShA UOThA ChZQ ETh-IDI ט כי כלם מיראים אותנו לאמר ירפו ידיהם מן-המלאכה ולא תעשה ועתה חזק את-ידי
10 As for me, I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut up; and he said: 'Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to slay you; yes, in the night will they come to slay you.' 11 I said: 'Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being such as I, could go into the temple and live? I will not go in.' IE UEMRA AEISh KMUNI IBRCh UMI KMUNI EShR-IBE EL-AAIKL UChI LE EBUE יא ואמרה האיש כמוני יברח ומי כמוני אשר-יבא אל-ההיכל וחי לא אבוא
12 I discerned, and, lo, God had not sent him; for he pronounced this prophecy against me, whereas Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. IB UEKIRA UANA LE-ELAIM ShLChU KI ANBUEA DBR OLI UTUBIA USNBLT ShKRU יב ואכירה והנה לא-אלהים שלחו כי הנבואה דבר עלי וטוביה וסנבלט שכרו
13 For this cause was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might taunt me. 14 Remember, O my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have me put in fear. 15 So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days. TU UThShLM AChUMA BOShRIM UChMShA LELUL LChMShIM UShNIM IUM טו ותשלם החומה בעשרים וחמשה לאלול לחמשים ושנים יום
16 It came to pass, when all our enemies heard thereof, that all the nations that were about us feared, and were much cast down in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God. TZ UIAI KEShR ShMOU KL-EUIBINU UIREU KL-AGUIM EShR SBIBThINU UIFLU MED BOINIAM UIDOU KI METh ELAINU NOShThA AMLEKA AZETh טז ויהי כאשר שמעו כל-אויבינו ויראו כל-הגוים אשר סביבתינו ויפלו מאד בעיניהם וידעו כי מאת אלהינו נעשתה המלאכה הזאת
17 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them. IZ GM BIMIM AAM MRBIM ChRI IAUDA EGRThIAM AULKUTh OL-TUBIA UEShR LTUBIA BEUTh ELIAM יז גם בימים ההם מרבים חרי יהודה אגרתיהם הולכות על-טוביה ואשר לטוביה באות אליהם
18 For there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah to wife. ICh KI-RBIM BIAUDA BOLI ShBUOA LU KI-ChThN AUE LShKNIA BN-ERCh UIAUChNN BNU LQCh ETh-BTh-MShLM BN BRKIA יח כי-רבים ביהודה בעלי שבועה לו כי-חתן הוא לשכניה בן-ארח ויהוחנן בנו לקח את-בת-משלם בן ברכיה
19 Also they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear. IT GM TUBThIU AIU EMRIM LFNI UDBRI AIU MUTsIEIM LU EGRUTh ShLCh TUBIA LIRENI יט גם טובתיו היו אמרים לפני ודברי היו מוציאים לו אגרות שלח טוביה ליראני
