Jonah's Disobedience | ||||
| 1 Now the word of IAUA came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying: | E UIAI DBR-IAUA EL-IUNA BN-EMThI LEMR | א ויהי דבר-יהוה אל-יונה בן-אמתי לאמר | ||
| 2 'Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim against it; for their wickedness is come up before Me.' | B QUM LK EL-NINUA AOIR AGDULA UQRE OLIA KI-OLThA ROThM LFNI | ב קום לך אל-נינוה העיר הגדולה וקרא עליה כי-עלתה רעתם לפני | ||
| 3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of IAUA; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, from the presence of IAUA. | G UIQM IUNA LBRCh ThRShIShA MLFNI IAUA UIRD IFU UIMTsE ENIA BEA ThRShISh UIThN ShKRA UIRD BA LBUE OMAM ThRShIShA MLFNI IAUA | ג ויקם יונה לברח תרשישה מלפני יהוה וירד יפו וימצא אניה באה תרשיש ויתן שכרה וירד בה לבוא עמהם תרשישה מלפני יהוה | ||
| 4 But IAUA hurled a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. | D UIAUA ATIL RUCh-GDULA EL-AIM UIAI SOR-GDUL BIM UAENIA ChShBA LAShBR | ד ויהוה הטיל רוח-גדולה אל-הים ויהי סער-גדול בים והאניה חשבה להשבר | ||
| 5 The mariners were afraid, and cried every man to his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it to them. | 6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him: 'What mean you that you sleep? arise, call on your God, if so be that God will think on us, that we perish not.' | U UIQRB ELIU RB AChBL UIEMR LU MA-LK NRDM QUM QRE EL-ELAIK EULI IThOShTh AELAIM LNU ULE NEBD | ו ויקרב אליו רב החבל ויאמר לו מה-לך נרדם קום קרא אל-אלהיך אולי יתעשת האלהים לנו ולא נאבד | ||
| 7 They said every one to his fellow: 'Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is on us.' | 8 Then said they to him: 'Tell us, we pray you, for whose cause this evil is on us: what is your occupation? and whence come you? what is your country? and of what people are you?' | Ch UIEMRU ELIU AGIDA-NE LNU BEShR LMI-AROA AZETh LNU MA-MLEKThK UMEIN ThBUE MA ERTsK UEI-MZA OM EThA | ח ויאמרו אליו הגידה-נא לנו באשר למי-הרעה הזאת לנו מה-מלאכתך ומאין תבוא מה ארצך ואי-מזה עם אתה | ||
| 9 He said to them: 'I am an Hebrew; and I fear IAUA, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.' | T UIEMR ELIAM OBRI ENKI UETh-IAUA ELAI AShMIM ENI IRE EShR-OShA ETh-AIM UETh-AIBShA | ט ויאמר אליהם עברי אנכי ואת-יהוה אלהי השמים אני ירא אשר-עשה את-הים ואת-היבשה | ||
| 10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him: 'What is this that you have done?' For the men knew that he fled from the presence of IAUA, because he had told them. | I UIIREU AENShIM IREA GDULA UIEMRU ELIU MA-ZETh OShITh KI-IDOU AENShIM KI-MLFNI IAUA AUE BRCh KI AGID LAM | י וייראו האנשים יראה גדולה ויאמרו אליו מה-זאת עשית כי-ידעו האנשים כי-מלפני יהוה הוא ברח כי הגיד להם | ||
| 11 Then said they to him: 'What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?' for the sea grew more and more tempestuous. | IE UIEMRU ELIU MA-NOShA LK UIShThQ AIM MOLINU KI AIM AULK USOR | יא ויאמרו אליו מה-נעשה לך וישתק הים מעלינו כי הים הולך וסער | ||
| 12 He said to them: 'Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm to you; for I know that for my sake this great tempest is on you.' | IB UIEMR ELIAM ShEUNI UATILNI EL-AIM UIShThQ AIM MOLIKM KI IUDO ENI KI BShLI ASOR AGDUL AZA OLIKM | יב ויאמר אליהם שאוני והטילני אל-הים וישתק הים מעליכם כי יודע אני כי בשלי הסער הגדול הזה עליכם | ||
| 13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. | IG UIChThRU AENShIM LAShIB EL-AIBShA ULE IKLU KI AIM AULK USOR OLIAM | יג ויחתרו האנשים להשיב אל-היבשה ולא יכלו כי הים הולך וסער עליהם | ||
| 14 Wherefore they cried to IAUA, and said: 'We beseech You, O IAUA, we beseech You, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not on us innocent blood; for You, O IAUA, have done as it pleased You.' | ID UIQREU EL-IAUA UIEMRU ENA IAUA EL-NE NEBDA BNFSh AEISh AZA UEL-ThThN OLINU DM NQIE KI-EThA IAUA KEShR ChFTsTh OShITh | יד ויקראו אל-יהוה ויאמרו אנה יהוה אל-נא נאבדה בנפש האיש הזה ואל-תתן עלינו דם נקיא כי-אתה יהוה כאשר חפצת עשית | ||
| 15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging. | TU UIShEU ETh-IUNA UITLAU EL-AIM UIOMD AIM MZOFU | טו וישאו את-יונה ויטלהו אל-הים ויעמד הים מזעפו | ||
| 16 Then the men feared IAUA exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to IAUA, and made vows. | TZ UIIREU AENShIM IREA GDULA ETh-IAUA UIZBChU-ZBCh LIAUA UIDRU NDRIM | טז וייראו האנשים יראה גדולה את-יהוה ויזבחו-זבח ליהוה וידרו נדרים | ||
