Hezekiah Seeks Isaiah's Help

1 It came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of IAUA.   E UIAI KShMO AMLK ChZQIAU UIQRO ETh-BGDIU UIThKS BShQ UIBE BITh IAUA   א ויהי כשמע המלך חזקיהו ויקרע את-בגדיו ויתכס בשק ויבא בית יהוה
2 He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.   B UIShLCh ETh-ELIQIM EShR-OL-ABITh UETh ShBNE ASUFR UETh ZQNI AKANIM MThKSIM BShQIM EL-IShOIAU BN-EMUTs ANBIE   ב וישלח את-אליקים אשר-על-הבית ואת שבנא הסופר ואת זקני הכהנים מתכסים בשקים אל-ישעיהו בן-אמוץ הנביא
3 They said to him: 'Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of contumely; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.   G UIEMRU ELIU KA EMR ChZQIAU IUM-TsRA UThUKChA UNETsA AIUM AZA KI BEU BNIM OD-MShBR UKCh EIN LLDA   ג ויאמרו אליו כה אמר חזקיהו יום-צרה ותוכחה ונאצה היום הזה כי באו בנים עד-משבר וכח אין ללדה
4 It may be IAUA your God will hear the words of Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to taunt the living God, and will rebuke the words which IAUA your God has heard; wherefore make prayer for the remnant that is left.'   D EULI IShMO IAUA ELAIK ETh DBRI RBShQA EShR ShLChU MLK-EShUR EDNIU LChRF ELAIM ChI UAUKICh BDBRIM EShR ShMO IAUA ELAIK UNShETh ThFLA BOD AShERITh ANMTsEA   ד אולי ישמע יהוה אלהיך את דברי רבשקה אשר שלחו מלך-אשור אדניו לחרף אלהים חי והוכיח בדברים אשר שמע יהוה אלהיך ונשאת תפלה בעד השארית הנמצאה
5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.   A UIBEU OBDI AMLK ChZQIAU EL-IShOIAU   ה ויבאו עבדי המלך חזקיהו אל-ישעיהו
6 Isaiah said to them: 'Thus shall you say to your master: Thus says IAUA: Be not afraid of the words that you have heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.   U UIEMR ELIAM IShOIAU KA ThEMRUN EL-EDNIKM KA EMR IAUA EL-ThIRE MFNI ADBRIM EShR ShMOTh EShR GDFU NORI MLK-EShUR EUThI   ו ויאמר אליהם ישעיהו כה תאמרון אל-אדניכם כה אמר יהוה אל-תירא מפני הדברים אשר שמעת אשר גדפו נערי מלך-אשור אותי
7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.'   Z ANNI NUThN BU RUCh UShMO ShMUOA UShB EL-ERTsU UAFLThIU BChRB BERTsU   ז הנני נותן בו רוח ושמע שמועה ושב אל-ארצו והפלתיו בחרב בארצו
8 So Rab-shakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.   Ch UIShB RBShQA UIMTsE ETh-MLK EShUR NLChM OL-LBNA KI ShMO KI NSO MLKISh   ח וישב רבשקה וימצא את-מלך אשור נלחם על-לבנה כי שמע כי נסע מלכיש
9 He heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia: 'He is come out to fight against you.' When he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying:   T UIShMO OL-ThRAQA MLK-KUSh LEMR ITsE LALChM EThK UIShMO UIShLCh MLEKIM EL-ChZQIAU LEMR   ט וישמע על-תרהקה מלך-כוש לאמר יצא להלחם אתך וישמע וישלח מלאכים אל-חזקיהו לאמר
10 'Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying: Let not your God in whom you trust beguile you, saying: Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.   I KA ThEMRUN EL-ChZQIAU MLK-IAUDA LEMR EL-IShEK ELAIK EShR EThA BUTCh BU LEMR LE ThNThN IRUShLM BID MLK EShUR   י כה תאמרון אל-חזקיהו מלך-יהודה לאמר אל-ישאך אלהיך אשר אתה בוטח בו לאמר לא תנתן ירושלם ביד מלך אשור
11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly; and shall you be delivered?   IE ANA EThA ShMOTh EShR OShU MLKI EShUR LKL-AERTsUTh LAChRIMM UEThA ThNTsL   יא הנה אתה שמעת אשר עשו מלכי אשור לכל-הארצות להחרימם ואתה תנצל
12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Telassar?   IB AATsILU EUThM ELAI AGUIM EShR AShChIThU EBUThI ETh-GUZN UETh-ChRN URTsF UBNI-ODN EShR BThLShR   יב ההצילו אותם אלהי הגוים אשר השחיתו אבותי את-גוזן ואת-חרן ורצף ובני-עדן אשר בתלשר
13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?'   IG EIA MLK-ChMTh UMLK ERFD UMLK LOIR SFRUIM ANO UOUA   יג איה מלך-חמת ומלך ארפד ומלך לעיר ספרוים הנע ועוה
14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of IAUA, and spread it before IAUA.   ID UIQCh ChZQIAU ETh-ASFRIM MID AMLEKIM UIQREAU UIOL BITh IAUA UIFRShAU ChZQIAU LFNI IAUA   יד ויקח חזקיהו את-הספרים מיד המלאכים ויקראהו ויעל בית יהוה ויפרשהו חזקיהו לפני יהוה
15 Hezekiah prayed to IAUA, saying:   TU UIThFLL ChZQIAU EL-IAUA LEMR   טו ויתפלל חזקיהו אל-יהוה לאמר
16 'O IAUA of hosts, the God of Israel, that sit on the cherubim, You are the God, even You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; You have made heaven and earth.   TZ IAUA TsBEUTh ELAI IShREL IShB AKRBIM EThA-AUE AELAIM LBDK LKL MMLKUTh AERTs EThA OShITh ETh-AShMIM UETh-AERTs   טז יהוה צבאות אלהי ישראל ישב הכרבים אתה-הוא האלהים לבדך לכל ממלכות הארץ אתה עשית את-השמים ואת-הארץ
17 Incline Your ear, O IAUA, and hear; open Your eyes, O IAUA, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who has sent to taunt the living God.   IZ ATA IAUA EZNK UShMO FQCh IAUA OINK UREA UShMO ETh KL-DBRI SNChRIB EShR ShLCh LChRF ELAIM ChI   יז הטה יהוה אזנך ושמע פקח יהוה עינך וראה ושמע את כל-דברי סנחריב אשר שלח לחרף אלהים חי
18 Of a truth, IAUA, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the countries, and their land,   ICh EMNM IAUA AChRIBU MLKI EShUR ETh-KL-AERTsUTh UETh-ERTsM   יח אמנם יהוה החריבו מלכי אשור את-כל-הארצות ואת-ארצם
19 and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.   IT UNThN ETh-ELAIAM BESh KI LE ELAIM AMA KI EM-MOShA IDI-EDM OTs UEBN UIEBDUM   יט ונתן את-אלהיהם באש כי לא אלהים המה כי אם-מעשה ידי-אדם עץ ואבן ויאבדום
20 Now therefore, O IAUA our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are IAUA, even You only.'   K UOThA IAUA ELAINU AUShIONU MIDU UIDOU KL-MMLKUTh AERTs KI-EThA IAUA LBDK   כ ועתה יהוה אלהינו הושיענו מידו וידעו כל-ממלכות הארץ כי-אתה יהוה לבדך
21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying: 'Thus says IAUA, the God of Israel: Whereas you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria,   KE UIShLCh IShOIAU BN-EMUTs EL-ChZQIAU LEMR KA-EMR IAUA ELAI IShREL EShR AThFLLTh ELI EL-SNChRIB MLK EShUR   כא וישלח ישעיהו בן-אמוץ אל-חזקיהו לאמר כה-אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל אשר התפללת אלי אל-סנחריב מלך אשור
22 this is the word which IAUA has spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.   KB ZA ADBR EShR-DBR IAUA OLIU BZA LK LOGA LK BThULTh BTh-TsIUN EChRIK RESh ANIOA BTh IRUShLM   כב זה הדבר אשר-דבר יהוה עליו בזה לך לעגה לך בתולת בת-ציון אחריך ראש הניעה בת ירושלם
23 Whom have you taunted and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice? Yes, you have lifted up your eyes on high, even against the Holy One of Israel!   KG ETh-MI ChRFTh UGDFTh UOL-MI ARIMUThA QUL UThShE MRUM OINIK EL-QDUSh IShREL   כג את-מי חרפת וגדפת ועל-מי הרימותה קול ותשא מרום עיניך אל-קדוש ישראל
24 By your servants have you taunted the Lord, and have said: With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I have cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice cypress-trees thereof; and I have entered into his farthest height, the forest of his fruitful field.   KD BID OBDIK ChRFTh EDNI UThEMR BRB RKBI ENI OLIThI MRUM ARIM IRKThI LBNUN UEKRTh QUMTh ERZIU MBChR BRShIU UEBUE MRUM QTsU IOR KRMLU   כד ביד עבדיך חרפת אדני ותאמר ברב רכבי אני עליתי מרום הרים ירכתי לבנון ואכרת קומת ארזיו מבחר ברשיו ואבוא מרום קצו יער כרמלו
25 I have digged and drunk water, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of Egypt.   KA ENI QRThI UShThIThI MIM UEChRB BKF-FOMI KL IERI MTsUR   כה אני קרתי ושתיתי מים ואחרב בכף-פעמי כל יארי מצור
26 Have you not heard? Long ago I made it, in ancient times I fashioned it; now have I brought it to pass, yes, it is done; that fortified cities should be laid waste into ruinous heaps.   KU ALUE-ShMOTh LMRChUQ EUThA OShIThI MIMI QDM UITsRThIA OThA ABEThIA UThAI LAShEUTh GLIM NTsIM ORIM BTsRUTh   כו הלוא-שמעת למרחוק אותה עשיתי מימי קדם ויצרתיה עתה הבאתיה ותהי להשאות גלים נצים ערים בצרות
27 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as a field of corn before it is grown up.   KZ UIShBIAN QTsRI-ID ChThU UBShU AIU OShB ShDA UIRQ DShE ChTsIR GGUTh UShDMA LFNI QMA   כז וישביהן קצרי-יד חתו ובשו היו עשב שדה וירק דשא חציר גגות ושדמה לפני קמה
28 But I know your sitting down, and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging against Me.   KCh UShBThK UTsEThK UBUEK IDOThI UETh AThRGZK ELI   כח ושבתך וצאתך ובואך ידעתי ואת התרגזך אלי
29 Because of your raging against Me, and for that your uproar is come up into Mine ears, therefore will I put My hook in your nose, and My bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.   KT ION AThRGZK ELI UShENNK OLA BEZNI UShMThI ChChI BEFK UMThGI BShFThIK UAShIBThIK BDRK EShR-BETh BA   כט יען התרגזך אלי ושאננך עלה באזני ושמתי חחי באפך ומתגי בשפתיך והשיבתיך בדרך אשר-באת בה
30 This shall be the sign to you: you shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow you, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.   L UZA-LK AEUTh EKUL AShNA SFICh UBShNA AShNITh ShChIS UBShNA AShLIShITh ZROU UQTsRU UNTOU KRMIM UEKUL (UEKLU) FRIM   ל וזה-לך האות אכול השנה ספיח ובשנה השנית שחיס ובשנה השלישית זרעו וקצרו ונטעו כרמים ואכול (ואכלו) פרים
31 The remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.   LE UISFA FLITTh BITh-IAUDA ANShERA ShRSh LMTA UOShA FRI LMOLA   לא ויספה פליטת בית-יהודה הנשארה שרש למטה ועשה פרי למעלה
32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of mount Zion they that shall escape; the zeal of IAUA of hosts shall perform this.   LB KI MIRUShLM ThTsE ShERITh UFLITA MAR TsIUN QNETh IAUA TsBEUTh ThOShA-ZETh   לב כי מירושלם תצא שארית ופליטה מהר ציון קנאת יהוה צבאות תעשה-זאת
33 Therefore thus says IAUA concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast a mound against it.   LG LKN KA-EMR IAUA EL-MLK EShUR LE IBUE EL-AOIR AZETh ULE-IURA ShM ChTs ULE-IQDMNA MGN ULE-IShFK OLIA SLLA   לג לכן כה-אמר יהוה אל-מלך אשור לא יבוא אל-העיר הזאת ולא-יורה שם חץ ולא-יקדמנה מגן ולא-ישפך עליה סללה
34 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come to this city, says IAUA.   LD BDRK EShR-BE BA IShUB UEL-AOIR AZETh LE IBUE NEM-IAUA   לד בדרך אשר-בא בה ישוב ואל-העיר הזאת לא יבוא נאם-יהוה
35 For I will defend this city to save it, for Mine own sake, and for My servant David's sake.'   LA UGNUThI OL-AOIR AZETh LAUShIOA LMONI ULMON DUD OBDI   לה וגנותי על-העיר הזאת להושיעה למעני ולמען דוד עבדי
36 The angel of IAUA went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.   LU UITsE MLEK IAUA UIKA BMChNA EShUR MEA UShMNIM UChMShA ELF UIShKIMU BBQR UANA KLM FGRIM MThIM   לו ויצא מלאך יהוה ויכה במחנה אשור מאה ושמנים וחמשה אלף וישכימו בבקר והנה כלם פגרים מתים
37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went, and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.   LZ UISO UILK UIShB SNChRIB MLK-EShUR UIShB BNINUA   לז ויסע וילך וישב סנחריב מלך-אשור וישב בנינוה
38 It came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sarezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat.
