Jacob's Fear of Esau

3 Jacob said when he saw them: 'This is God's camp.' He called the name of that place Mahanaim. G UIEMR IOQB KEShR REM MChNA ELAIM ZA UIQRE ShM-AMQUM AAUE MChNIM ג ויאמר יעקב כאשר ראם מחנה אלהים זה ויקרא שם-המקום ההוא מחנים
4 Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother to the land of Seir, the field of Edom. D UIShLCh IOQB MLEKIM LFNIU EL-OShU EChIU ERTsA ShOIR ShDA EDUM ד וישלח יעקב מלאכים לפניו אל-עשו אחיו ארצה שעיר שדה אדום
5 He commanded them, saying: 'Thus shall you say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob: I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now. 7 The messengers returned to Jacob, saying: 'We came to your brother Esau, and moreover he comes to meet you, and four hundred men with him.' 8 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two camps. 9 He said: 'If Esau come to the one camp, and smite it, then the camp which is left shall escape.' T UIEMR EM-IBUE OShU EL-AMChNA AEChTh UAKAU UAIA AMChNA ANShER LFLITA ט ויאמר אם-יבוא עשו אל-המחנה האחת והכהו והיה המחנה הנשאר לפליטה
10 Jacob said: 'O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O IAUA, who said to me: Return to your country, and to your kindred, and I will do you good; I UIEMR IOQB ELAI EBI EBRAM UELAI EBI ITsChQ IAUA AEMR ELI ShUB LERTsK ULMULDThK UEITIBA OMK י ויאמר יעקב אלהי אבי אברהם ואלהי אבי יצחק יהוה האמר אלי שוב לארצך ולמולדתך ואיטיבה עמך
11 I am not worthy of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which You have shown to Your servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two camps. 13 You said: I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.' IG UEThA EMRTh AITB EITIB OMK UShMThI ETh-ZROK KChUL AIM EShR LE-ISFR MRB יג ואתה אמרת היטב איטיב עמך ושמתי את-זרעך כחול הים אשר לא-יספר מרב
14 He lodged there that night; and took of that which he had with him a present for Esau his brother: ID UILN ShM BLILA AAUE UIQCh MN-ABE BIDU MNChA LOShU EChIU יד וילן שם בלילה ההוא ויקח מן-הבא בידו מנחה לעשו אחיו
15 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, TU OZIM METhIM UThIShIM OShRIM RChLIM METhIM UEILIM OShRIM טו עזים מאתים ותישים עשרים רחלים מאתים ואילים עשרים

17 He delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and said to his servants: 'Pass over before me, and put a space between drove and drove.' 20 He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying: 'In this manner shall you speak to Esau, when you find him; K UITsU GM ETh-AShNI GM ETh-AShLIShI GM ETh-KL-AALKIM EChRI AODRIM LEMR KDBR AZA ThDBRUN EL-OShU BMTsEKM EThU כ ויצו גם את-השני גם את-השלישי גם את-כל-ההלכים אחרי העדרים לאמר כדבר הזה תדברון אל-עשו במצאכם אתו
21 and you shall say: Moreover, behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.' For he said: 'I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.' 23 He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven children, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok. 26 When he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him. KU UIRE KI LE IKL LU UIGO BKF-IRKU UThQO KF-IRK IOQB BAEBQU OMU כו וירא כי לא יכל לו ויגע בכף-ירכו ותקע כף-ירך יעקב בהאבקו עמו

32 The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped on his thigh. LB UIZRCh-LU AShMSh KEShR OBR ETh-FNUEL UAUE TsLO OL-IRKU לב ויזרח-לו השמש כאשר עבר את-פנואל והוא צלע על-ירכו
33 Therefore the children of Israel eat not the sinew of the thigh-vein which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day; because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh, even in the sinew of the thigh-vein.
