| 1 David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them. | E UIFQD DUD ETh-AOM EShR EThU UIShM OLIAM ShRI ELFIM UShRI MEUTh | א ויפקד דוד את-העם אשר אתו וישם עליהם שרי אלפים ושרי מאות | ||
| 2 David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. | 4 The king said to them: 'What seems you best I will do.' | 5 The king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying: 'Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom.' | 6 So the people went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim. | U UITsE AOM AShDA LQRETh IShREL UThAI AMLChMA BIOR EFRIM | ו ויצא העם השדה לקראת ישראל ותהי המלחמה ביער אפרים | ||
| 7 The people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men. | Z UINGFU ShM OM IShREL LFNI OBDI DUD UThAI-ShM AMGFA GDULA BIUM AAUE OShRIM ELF | ז וינגפו שם עם ישראל לפני עבדי דוד ותהי-שם המגפה גדולה ביום ההוא עשרים אלף | ||
| 8 For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured. | Ch UThAI-ShM AMLChMA NFTsUTh (NFUTsTh) OL-FNI KL-AERTs UIRB AIOR LEKL BOM MEShR EKLA AChRB BIUM AAUE | ח ותהי-שם המלחמה נפצות (נפוצת) על-פני כל-הארץ וירב היער לאכל בעם מאשר אכלה החרב ביום ההוא | ||
| 9 Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. | 10 A certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said: 'Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in a terebinth.' | I UIRE EISh EChD UIGD LIUEB UIEMR ANA REIThI ETh-EBShLM ThLUI BELA | י וירא איש אחד ויגד ליואב ויאמר הנה ראיתי את-אבשלם תלוי באלה | ||
| 11 Joab said to the man that told him: 'And, behold, you saw it, and why didst you not smite him there to the ground? and I would have had to give you ten pieces of silver, and a girdle.' | IE UIEMR IUEB LEISh AMGID LU UANA REITh UMDUO LE-AKIThU ShM ERTsA UOLI LThTh LK OShRA KSF UChGRA EChTh | יא ויאמר יואב לאיש המגיד לו והנה ראית ומדוע לא-הכיתו שם ארצה ועלי לתת לך עשרה כסף וחגרה אחת | ||

| 13 Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against mine own life--and there is no matter hid from the king--then you yourself would have stood aloof.' | IG EU-OShIThI BNFShU (BNFShI) ShQR UKL-DBR LE-IKChD MN-AMLK UEThA ThThITsB MNGD | יג או-עשיתי בנפשו (בנפשי) שקר וכל-דבר לא-יכחד מן-המלך ואתה תתיצב מנגד | ||
| 14 Then said Joab: 'I may not tarry thus with you.' | 15 Ten young men that bore Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him. | TU UISBU OShRA NORIM NShEI KLI IUEB UIKU ETh-EBShLUM UIMThAU | טו ויסבו עשרה נערים נשאי כלי יואב ויכו את-אבשלום וימתהו | ||
| 16 Joab blew the horn, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held back the people. | TZ UIThQO IUEB BShFR UIShB AOM MRDF EChRI IShREL KI-ChShK IUEB ETh-AOM | טז ויתקע יואב בשפר וישב העם מרדף אחרי ישראל כי-חשך יואב את-העם | ||
| 17 They took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones; and all Israel fled every one to his tent.-- | IZ UIQChU ETh-EBShLUM UIShLKU EThU BIOR EL-AFChTh AGDUL UITsBU OLIU GL-EBNIM GDUL MED UKL-IShREL NSU EISh LEALU | יז ויקחו את-אבשלום וישלכו אתו ביער אל-הפחת הגדול ויצבו עליו גל-אבנים גדול מאד וכל-ישראל נסו איש לאהלו | ||
| 18 Now Absalom in his life-time had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king's dale; for he said: 'I have no son to keep my name in remembrance'; and he called the pillar after his own name; and it is called Absalom's monument to this day. | ICh UEBShLM LQCh UITsB-LU BChIU ETh-MTsBTh EShR BOMQ-AMLK KI EMR EIN-LI BN BOBUR AZKIR ShMI UIQRE LMTsBTh OL-ShMU UIQRE LA ID EBShLUM OD AIUM AZA | יח ואבשלם לקח ויצב-לו בחיו את-מצבת אשר בעמק-המלך כי אמר אין-לי בן בעבור הזכיר שמי ויקרא למצבת על-שמו ויקרא לה יד אבשלום עד היום הזה | ||
| 19 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok: 'Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that IAUA has avenged him of his enemies.' | IT UEChIMOTs BN-TsDUQ EMR ERUTsA NE UEBShRA ETh-AMLK KI-ShFTU IAUA MID EIBIU | יט ואחימעץ בן-צדוק אמר ארוצה נא ואבשרה את-המלך כי-שפטו יהוה מיד איביו | ||

| 21 Then said Joab to the Cushite: 'Go tell the king what you have seen.' The Cushite bowed down to Joab, and ran. | KE UIEMR IUEB LKUShI LK AGD LMLK EShR REIThA UIShThChU KUShI LIUEB UIRTs | כא ויאמר יואב לכושי לך הגד למלך אשר ראיתה וישתחו כושי ליואב וירץ | ||
| 22 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab: 'But come what may, let me, I pray you, also run after the Cushite.' | 25 The watchman cried, and told the king. The king said: 'If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth.' He came apace, and drew near. | KA UIQRE ATsFA UIGD LMLK UIEMR AMLK EM-LBDU BShURA BFIU UILK ALUK UQRB | כה ויקרא הצפה ויגד למלך ויאמר המלך אם-לבדו בשורה בפיו וילך הלוך וקרב | ||
| 26 The watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the porter, and said: 'Behold another man running alone.' The king said: 'He also brings tidings.' | KU UIRE ATsFA EISh-EChR RTs UIQRE ATsFA EL-AShOR UIEMR ANA-EISh RTs LBDU UIEMR AMLK GM-ZA MBShR | כו וירא הצפה איש-אחר רץ ויקרא הצפה אל-השער ויאמר הנה-איש רץ לבדו ויאמר המלך גם-זה מבשר | ||
| 27 The watchman said: 'I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.' | 28 Ahimaaz called, and said to the king: 'All is well.' | 29 The king said: 'Is it well with the young man Absalom?' | 32 The king said to the Cushite: 'Is it well with the young man Absalom?'
