Israel Demands a King
1 It came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. E UIAI KEShR ZQN ShMUEL UIShM ETh-BNIU ShFTIM LIShREL א ויהי כאשר זקן שמואל וישם את-בניו שפטים לישראל
2 Now the name of his first-born was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beer-sheba. B UIAI ShM-BNU ABKUR IUEL UShM MShNAU EBIA ShFTIM BBER ShBO ב ויהי שם-בנו הבכור יואל ושם משנהו אביה שפטים בבאר שבע

4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel to Ramah. D UIThQBTsU KL ZQNI IShREL UIBEU EL-ShMUEL ARMThA ד ויתקבצו כל זקני ישראל ויבאו אל-שמואל הרמתה
5 They said to him: 'Behold, you are old, and your sons walk not in your ways; now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.' 6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said: 'Give us a king to judge us.' Samuel prayed to IAUA. U UIRO ADBR BOINI ShMUEL KEShR EMRU ThNA-LNU MLK LShFTNU UIThFLL ShMUEL EL-IAUA ו וירע הדבר בעיני שמואל כאשר אמרו תנה-לנו מלך לשפטנו ויתפלל שמואל אל-יהוה
7 IAUA said to Samuel: 'Hearken to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not be king over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken Me, and served other gods, so do they also to you. 9 Now therefore hearken to their voice; howbeit you shall earnestly forewarn them, and shall declare to them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.' 10 Samuel told all the words of IAUA to the people that asked of him a king. I UIEMR ShMUEL ETh KL-DBRI IAUA EL-AOM AShELIM METhU MLK י ויאמר שמואל את כל-דברי יהוה אל-העם השאלים מאתו מלך
11 He said: 'This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them to him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots. IE UIEMR ZA IAIA MShFT AMLK EShR IMLK OLIKM ETh-BNIKM IQCh UShM LU BMRKBThU UBFRShIU URTsU LFNI MRKBThU יא ויאמר זה יהיה משפט המלך אשר ימלך עליכם את-בניכם יקח ושם לו במרכבתו ובפרשיו ורצו לפני מרכבתו
12 He will appoint them to him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. IG UETh-BNUThIKM IQCh LRQChUTh ULTBChUTh ULEFUTh יג ואת-בנותיכם יקח לרקחות ולטבחות ולאפות
14 He will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. ID UETh-ShDUThIKM UETh-KRMIKM UZIThIKM ATUBIM IQCh UNThN LOBDIU יד ואת-שדותיכם ואת-כרמיכם וזיתיכם הטובים יקח ונתן לעבדיו
15 He will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. TU UZROIKM UKRMIKM IOShR UNThN LSRISIU ULOBDIU טו וזרעיכם וכרמיכם יעשר ונתן לסריסיו ולעבדיו
16 He will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your best young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. TZ UETh-OBDIKM UETh-ShFChUThIKM UETh-BChURIKM ATUBIM UETh-ChMURIKM IQCh UOShA LMLEKThU טז ואת-עבדיכם ואת-שפחותיכם ואת-בחוריכם הטובים ואת-חמוריכם יקח ועשה למלאכתו
17 He will take the tenth of your flocks; and you shall be his servants. IZ TsENKM IOShR UEThM ThAIU-LU LOBDIM יז צאנכם יעשר ואתם תהיו-לו לעבדים
18 You shall cry out in that day because of your king whom you shall have chosen you; and IAUA will not answer you in that day.' ICh UZOQThM BIUM AAUE MLFNI MLKKM EShR BChRThM LKM ULE-IONA IAUA EThKM BIUM AAUE יח וזעקתם ביום ההוא מלפני מלככם אשר בחרתם לכם ולא-יענה יהוה אתכם ביום ההוא
19 But the people refused to hearken to the voice of Samuel; and they said: 'Nay; but there shall be a king over us; IT UIMENU AOM LShMO BQUL ShMUEL UIEMRU LE KI EM-MLK IAIA OLINU יט וימאנו העם לשמע בקול שמואל ויאמרו לא כי אם-מלך יהיה עלינו
20 that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.' K UAIINU GM-ENChNU KKL-AGUIM UShFTNU MLKNU UITsE LFNINU UNLChM ETh-MLChMThNU כ והיינו גם-אנחנו ככל-הגוים ושפטנו מלכנו ויצא לפנינו ונלחם את-מלחמתנו
21 Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he spoke them in the ears of IAUA. KE UIShMO ShMUEL ETh KL-DBRI AOM UIDBRM BEZNI IAUA כא וישמע שמואל את כל-דברי העם וידברם באזני יהוה
22 IAUA said to Samuel: 'Hearken to their voice, and make them a king.' Samuel said to the men of Israel: 'Go you every man to his city.' Israel Demands a King
